Agua, saneamiento e higiene en escuelas en América Latina y el Caribe

Between 28 and 30 July, in Managua, Nicaragua, developed the Regional Symposium on "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools. A priority for early childhood development, "which brought together more than 60 professionals from 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean national and international institutions to share their experiences in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH by its initials in English) in schools, and take the first step in developing a common vision to bring these initiatives on a larger scale national and regional level.

The symposium, organized jointly by the partners of the Millennium Water Alliance in Central America (Water for People, CARE and Catholic Relief Service), Plan International and UNICEF (Regional Office and Nicaragua), called the Nicaraguan authorities on the subject in Nicaragua as well as representatives of the Ministries of Education and Health from other countries in the region. During the opening, officiated by the Minister Nicaragua Education, emphasized the challenge of improving the water, sanitation and hygiene in schools beyond the provision of physical facilities and should be part of comprehensive interventions to improve quality in education. It's also about the need for a coordinated effort to rescue the knowledge gained in recent years on the subject, and political commitment of the institutions responsible for the educational and water and sanitation at national level, but also of other actors Government (Ministries of Economy and Finance, Investment Funds, Local Government), cooperation (NGOs, cooperation agencies, donors, etc..) and especially the communities and children, empowering them in their own development.

The objectives of this meeting included the identification and dissemination of experiences, initiatives and tools in WASH in schools in the region, forming a network of partners to improve coordination between programs, and were in compliance during the three days of meeting Participants included presentations, plenary discussions and field visits. Identify mechanisms and strategies for integrating the components of WASH in schools and public policy programs for water and sanitation and quality education - also included in the objectives of the meeting - will require further work up between the partners and others to join, especially the institutions governing the issue in each country. The greatest achievement of the event was to gather a significant number of actors in the region and begin to plan around the theme of water, sanitation and hygiene in schools, and how to get to national and regional scales.

After three days of brainstorming sessions and field visits to schools in Nicaragua who have been working the issue by different actors in coordination with the Ministry of Education, the participants identified as key requirements for i) information on the current situation Water, sanitation and hygiene in schools, ii) to systematize the existing experiences and impacts, iii) develop strategies and action plans to give prominence to the issue and include it in the agendas of national leaders. The present interest in TES part of a coordinated effort from the Symposium was very clear, and the organizers made a commitment to continue nurturing this network of regional and international actors involved in the development of joint activities in WASH schools that meet the needs identified.

¿Qué pueden hacer las escuelas ahora para prepararse frente a un posible brote de gripe?

A moderate or severe outbreak of flu can cause a large number of people sick in a short period of time, alternating the operation of society, services, and straining health services. The school community should be informed and prepared. These are to promote effective measures to prevent transmission of influenza virus and other diseases.

1. Promote handwashing. hands not only spread germs that cause diarrhea, but can also be the vehicle of transmission of respiratory infections such as influenza. A healthy person can be infected by touching your nose, eyes or mouth after your hands have touched an object new-or surface contaminated with the influenza virus. Schools should promote hygiene routine of hand washing with soap and water for about 40 to 60 seconds, scrubbing between fingers, and air dry or clean towel, preferably disposable paper.

2. Promote good coughing and sneezing. flu virus can be transmitted through droplets that remain suspended in the air by talking, coughing or sneezing. To reduce the spread, teach students to be covered with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, rather than hands, and throw the tissue away immediately after. It is advisable to always wash hands after using a handkerchief. If no tissues are available, should be covered with the sleeve of the forearm. Being well prepared can make a difference at the time of responding to outbreaks of influenza. New behaviors take time to become routine. Each community has the opportunity and responsibility to prepare. Taken E-FluInfo, OPS, ELECTRONIC regional newsletter. For more information: http / /: www.paho.org

Regional Symposium: Water, sanitation and hygiene in schools promoted by UNICEF Regional Coordinator LM

April, 2009. UNICEF and the Consortium SWASH + ( involving CARE, Water For People, CRS and Millennium Water Alliance ) and Plan International Regional Symposium promote Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Schools, as an opportunity to exchange experiences and develop national and regional strategies to integrate the issue in public policies and programs relating to the sector.

The provision of adequate water, sanitation and hygiene in schools, especially hand washing, it becomes crucial to achieving the full realization of the rights of children to education and a healthy environment and dignity, rights inherent and indivisible for all children without exception.

In Latin America at least 25% of schools do not have adequate drinking water facilities and a third of them have no health in numbers sufficient and / or in good condition.

In recent years there have been efforts to improve health and quality of life of communities in schools, through the provision of infrastructure, promotion of hygiene and health education to children, but many of these experiences and their impact could not be viewed broadly and has been limited only to the area of \u200b\u200bintervention. Needed, then spaces for analysis, socialization and replication of these projects and initiatives that enable them sustainable, leading to a national / regional level.

For this reason UNICEF, the Consortium SWASH + (Involving CARE, Water For People, CRS and Millennium Water Alliance) and Plan International have been promoting the Regional Symposium on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools, as an opportunity to exchange experiences and develop strategies to bring all this knowledge acquired at a scale and impact.

To participate in this Regional Symposium are invited to submit a summary of their experiences in the selection process. Receipt of proposals closes May 3, 2009 . The results of the selection process will be announced on May 10, 2009, through direct communication.
