Se lanza Iniciativa de Lavado de Manos en Costa Rica


The Ministry of Health and the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA), launched on 5 June the Handwashing Initiative, under the name Healthy Drops. In the opening ceremony involved: Minister of Health, the President of AyA, the mayor of the municipality and the Director of PARTNER, institution that promotes public-private partnerships. Special guests were also present population of children beneficiaries, who gave a demonstration to the stage and invited the press on the correct way to wash hands with soap and water. Subsequently the opening ceremony, young volunteers and school children participated in sanitation and reforestation activities to commemorate World Environment Day.

Hand washing initiative is being implemented through the Nutrition and Child Development, Ministry of Health, in coordination with communications experts from the Ministry of Health and AyA and driving staff AyA Water Watchers Program.

In this first stage, which is considered a pilot, the project will cover high-risk priority cantons epidemiological South Central Region, serving a target group of 80 school children under 7 years. We have chosen this region, reporting the highest incidence of diarrhea, according to reports from the Department of Epidemiological Surveillance Ministry of Health. After evaluating the results of this pilot phase, the initiative will be extended to other Department of Nutrition and social risk schools located in other parts of the country, both the South Central Region, and other regions of the country. (In the case of schoolchildren, the project will include only those schools that are part of the Water Watchers program, the AyA).

Healthy Drops Project, is framed within the Regional Project Handwashing PROMAS, aimed at strengthening the promotion and education activities promoted by the Ministry of Health and the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers, to promote proper hand washing and the safe and rational use of water in the home (with emphasis on the issue of saving water).
