Día Mundial del Lavado de Manos en Nicaragua 2009





The October 15, 2009 was successfully held on World Handwashing in Nicaragua. UNICEF accompanied with the Swiss Cooperation, the Water and Sanitation Program World Bank (WSP-WB), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Education (MOE), who led these activities in the country, also participated in the preparations for this conference, the Nicaraguan Institute Water and Sewerage (INAA), the Network for Water and Sanitation in Nicaragua (Rasnic), the Social Investment Fund Emergency (FISE) and the Fundación SODIS.

Activities included:

October 9. Discussion between members of the Promoter Group Handwashing

The event presented the first survey of initiatives and projects on hand washing in the last ten years in Nicaragua, while the submission of the Strategy for implementation the handwashing initiative. Based on these presentations opened the discussion with the 30 representatives from government institutions, NGOs and agencies who attended.

October 15. Central act

Acahualinca In Elementary School, was a central event to celebrate this day. The event was chaired by the heads of the Ministry of Education, Health, the Nicaraguan Institute of Aqueducts and Sewage Systems (INAA) and Coordinator of the Network for Water and Sanitation in Nicaragua (Rasnic), the representative of the Fund's Emergency Social Investment (FISE) , UNICEF, Water and Sanitation Program World Bank (PAS-BM), Swiss Cooperation, and SODIS Foundation.

The activity highlighted the importance of promoting the habit of washing hands with soap and water in the general population, but particularly in children, as well as the caregivers of these, noting that this simple practice can be considered the cheapest and most practical vaccine to reduce diseases such as diarrhea, parasitic infections and conditions in the airways which cause serious damage in children.


October 15. LAVATON

The MOE promoted the realization of a LAVATON in which school children, taking into account the guidance given by teachers put into practice the knowledge process of washing hands with soap and water later to sign a document in which they committed individually to adopt this practice to make it a daily habit and also help to promote it in their school, home and community.

The Lavaton recorded the participation of some 9,000 children participating, this figure surpassed the record set last year of participating school 4.733

UNICEF, Swiss Cooperation, CARE, INPRHU Somoto supported the activity with the donation of promotional materials allusive World Day Handwashing, such as soaps, towels, pens, notepads, stickers, t-shirts, posters, reading separators between others.
