Water for People
Over 200 million children in 60 countries celebrated the World Day for Handwashing. This act sought to raise awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap and water, which the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is one of the most effective health interventions and economic gaps.
Fund United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said it is especially important to wash hands with soap and water "At key moments and after using the toilet and before preparing food." UNICEF
recalled Thursday that the simple act of washing hands, helping to reduce by more than 40% of cases of diarrhea and almost a 25% cases of respiratory infections. These conditions annually cause the death of more than 3.5 million children under five years.
In the case of Honduras, Water For People planned various activities as part of the Water , School Sanitation and Hygiene most impact in the Community (SWASH + for its acronym in English) in the Departments of Cortés, Santa Bárbara and Yoro. Hundreds of children with local authorities, teachers and parents, scheduled drawing competitions, poetry and declamation on the topic of hand washing in general. This activity
joined Colgate-Palmolive Corporation, which made a significant donation of soaps, which were distributed to all participating schools.
The Engineer Diana Betancourt, Regional Manager for Central Water For People, was very pleased with the attitude and commitment demonstrated by the municipal and school authorities in each community: "Stunning the enthusiasm and joy of children, teachers and parents participating in this activity, happy with their new stations, sinks and toilets. I am convinced that efforts such as these will generate positive cultural changes in improving hygiene and health, with huge benefits to the community at large. "
