Over 200 million children in 60 countries celebrated the World Day for Handwashing. This act sought to raise awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap and water, which the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is one of the most effective health interventions and economic gaps.

with much joy and fun, started the day of celebration of World Day for Handwashing held on October 15, Peru school in the capital of the Dominican Republic. The event began with the Dominican National Anthem which was sung by hundreds of children accompanied by their teachers. Subsequently, the Clean Hands team, led by the characters "drop", "soap" and "hand", taught the children and girls the proper way to wash your hands, through a children's song that said: "From now on I do not become ill, the bacteria that scares me not to play again."

The Clean Hands team was composed of members of the UNICEF office in the country, the characters in the campaign and supporters. The activity highlighted the importance of promoting the habit of washing hands with soap and water in the general population, but particularly in children, as well as the caregivers of these, noting that this simple practice can be considered the cheapest and most practical vaccine to reduce diseases such as diarrhea, parasitic infections and conditions in the airways which cause serious damage in children.


October 15. LAVATON

The MOE promoted the realization of a LAVATON in which school children, taking into account the guidance given by teachers put into practice the knowledge process of washing hands with soap and water later to sign a document in which they committed individually to adopt this practice to make it a daily habit and also help to promote it in their school, home and community.

With the slogan "Clean hands save lives", the children acting as agents of change, leading to their homes and communities on good hygiene practices they have learned in school. Their active participation and culturally sensitive interventions based on community focus on ensuring a sustained behavior change. Handwashing with soap is important, especially at critical moments, ie after using the toilet and before eating, its efficient use helps save lives.

Children under five years suffer disproportionately from diarrheal diseases and more than 3.5 million of them die from diseases related to diarrhea and pneumonia. The simple act of washing hands with soap can reduce the incidence rates of diarrhea among children under five years to nearly 50 per cent and respiratory infections to about 25 percent.

The World Day Handwashing began in 2008 as the Global Partnership initiative between the Public and Private Sectors to Promote Handwashing and is supported by several governmental and international institutions and civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies and individuals around the world.
